Features in detail
1. Chinese text search
- Type a sentence or single characters on the home screen, then search.
- The app extracts Chinese characters from your input and looks each one up.
- Results appear as a list; tap a character to open its detail page.
2. Cantonese pronunciation with audio
- Pronunciations come from the Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Cantonese dictionary (LexiCan).
- Multiple readings for the same character are shown when available.
- Tap a reading chip to play the corresponding sound file.
3. Same-sound characters (homophones)
- On the character detail page, browse characters that share the same Cantonese reading.
- Useful for writing, proofreading, and comparing similar forms.
4. Revised Mandarin Dictionary definitions
- Pulls definition lines from Taiwan’s Revised Mandarin Dictionary (MOE).
- Complements Cantonese readings with written-Chinese meaning.
- Helps when you need both spoken Cantonese and standard written sense.
5. Hong Kong primary-school lexical items
- Based on the Education Bureau’s Primary School Chinese Lexical Items list.
- Phrases related to the character are grouped by Learning Stage 1 and Learning Stage 2.
- Each item shows Mandarin and Cantonese pinyin.
- Tap the Mandarin or Cantonese pinyin to play audio (multi-syllable phrases play in sequence).
- Words are shown as chips in a wrapping layout so you can scan the whole stage at a glance; tap a word to expand its pinyin panel. Expanding near the bottom auto-scrolls so the panel stays visible.
6. Stroke-order demonstration
- When stroke-order data is available for a character, a Stroke Order section appears on the detail page.
- Tap Check the stroke ordering to open a dedicated full-height screen.
- The screen loads the Education Bureau stroke-order demo in a WebView (play, pause, and grid options as provided by the official page).
7. Query history
- Recent searches are kept as query history.
- Focus the search field to see history chips; tap one to run that query again.
8. Copy tools on the detail page
From the top-right menu (⋯):
- Copy Sound — all pronunciation strings, separated by spaces
- Copy Same-Sound Characters — all homophones, with no spaces between characters
- Copy Explanation — all definition lines, separated by newlines
9. On-device caching
- Lexicon HTML, pronunciation audio, EDB phrase HTML/audio, and related assets are cached when possible.
- Later lookups prefer cache first, then refresh from the network when needed—so repeat searches feel faster and use less data.
10. iPhone & iPad
- Built as a native iOS app for iPhone and iPad.
- Localized UI strings for English and Traditional Chinese regions (including zh-HK, zh-TW, zh-MO, zh-Hant).
